I also think that at the airport, the staff in the duty free shop are telling people that you can take 3200 cigerettes into the uk.
My Inlaws came back last week, and they was told this, I explained that this was not the case, and if you do get stopped then they will be confiscated.

Some people will take that risk.

Does anybody know why this restriction is in place and for how long it will be in place? It seems strange when Bulgaria is now part of the EU and there is supposed to be free movement between member countries

Hi

I was informed by customs when I entered with more than allowance and got stopped, that it is a Bulgarian tax issue, and it will not change for the near future.

The shops in Airport had no problem selling them to me though

The allocation of 200 per person is the same as any of the new eastern block countries, yes it is to do with the tax so 200 looks like it will stay for a long time yet

We got stopped two years ago, was not a nice experience, and we was informed at the time Bulgaria was not in the EU, that although countries like Romania and Poland were in the EU, the allowance from these countries were also effected, that is you were not allowed to bring in the amount of 3200 cigerettes per person. We was also informed that these countries that joined the EU probably would not be changing the allowances for at least another 7 years.... Bulgaria then joined the EU I think it was 2 years after......, may have that wrong, but again it would be a very long time before this would be lifted, if at all it was going to be....................
